CITY OF BURNABY COMMITS $5M TO FIRST PEOPLES' GATHERING HOUSE AT SFU

The new funding demonstrates the City’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, by working with Indigenous peoples to build and improve relationships between non-Indigenous and Indigenous communities.

Being built on the traditional unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) nations on which SFU is located, with the support of Host Nations, the First Peoples’ Gathering House will provide a culturally appropriate ceremonial space for Indigenous cultural events, and enable the university and broader communities to gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous peoples through education and engagement.

 

SFU AND UVIC JOIN FORCES TO STUDY CLIMATE SOLUTIONS FOR RURAL, REMOTE AND INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES

An interdisciplinary team from SFU, the University of Victoria and partner organizations will use $1 million from the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions to study climate solutions for rural, remote and Indigenous communities in B.C.

Together, the partners will determine what policies and innovations in housing practices and technical safety are needed to enable communities outside major urban centres to create low-carbon resilience, reducing both their carbon footprint and their vulnerability to the impacts of climate change.

 

SFU PARTNERS WITH THE WORLD'S TOP AGRITECH UNIVERSITY TO ACCELERATE INNOVATION

During an innovation day event hosted by the B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation in Surrey on April 19, SFU and Wageningen University & Research signed a Letter of Intent to collaborate on future research programs, share knowledge and spark innovation in the agritech field.

“I am excited about this partnership because SFU and Wageningen University & Research have a shared commitment to advancing knowledge and solutions to global challenges,” says SFU President Joy Johnson. “Together, we will tackle critical topics such as food production and climate change, and I look forward to seeing the results of our joint efforts in the years ahead.”

 

FOR PEOPLE AND PLANET: Q&A WITH SFU'S CENTRAL SUSTAINABILITY TEAM

Saturday, April 22 was Earth Day—and for SFU, Earth Day is every day. In this Q&A, Candace Ratelle Le Roy, executive director of SFU’s sustainability team, discusses how they support actions big and small across our communities, shares her hopes for the future and explains how SFU is taking action to address global challenges. If you are interested, the team can provide resources and support for actions that could make a difference.

 

CREATING SEAWEED SOLUTION TO OCEAN PLASTICS

Coast Capital Venture Prize is SFU’s largest entrepreneurship competition open to the university community. This year’s competitors represented students, staff, faculty members and recent alumni from seven of SFU's eight faculties.

PhyCo Technologies, co-founded by SFU biology graduate student Ranah Chavoshi, has won the top prize in this year's competition. The company has partnered with local Indigenous communities to develop a bio-based plastic made from seaweed that can break down in a home compost in just four weeks.

The $10,000 cash award will be used to further develop this innovative product.

PLACE BOOK REQUESTS FOR BENNETT LIBRARY'S 5TH FLOOR

This space, located at SFU's Burnaby campus, will be closed for approximately one year for necessary repairs. Visit the website to learn more about how the library is providing access to collections during the closure, including a request period, which is open until April 30.
