RESEARCHERS USE 21ST CENTURY METHODS TO RECORD 2,000 YEARS OF ANCIENT GRAFFITI IN EGYPT

SFU geography professor Nick Hedley and SFU archaeologist Sabrina Higgins are learning more about ancient graffiti—and their intriguing comparisons to modern graffiti—as they produce a state-of-the-art 3D recording of the Temple of Isis in Philae, Egypt.

Working with the University of Ottawa, the researchers published their early findings in Egyptian Archaeology and have returned to Philae to advance the project.

TRANSFORMING DATA AT SFU

From admissions to payroll records to research statistics, SFU generates a mountain of data. But where is that data located, who governs it and who makes sure it’s protected and safe?

SFU's Data Governance team is formalizing how the university community manages and protects institutional data. They have recently launched a website that will serve as a one-stop shop.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: FILMING RETURNS TO SFU CAMPUSES

Keep your eyes on the screen and you might just catch a glimpse of SFU in a starring role in your favourite TV show or upcoming movie thanks to a partnership between SFU Meeting, Event and Conference Services and Creative BC. Through this partnership, we’re returning SFU to the spotlight as a filming location and supporting local industry.

UPDATE ON LABOUR RELATIONS BOARD MEDIATION

Earlier this week, Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) conducted a strike vote, announcing a vote outcome in favour of a strike. It is important to note that the strike vote does not mean that the TSSU is currently on strike.

To move negotiations ahead productively, SFU applied for mediation at the BC Labour Relations Board (LRB). Mediation offers a process for parties to resolve outstanding issues with the help of a mediator and also enables the parties to continue working together at the bargaining table. The mediator has connected with the parties and has assigned mediation dates through April 27th, 2023.

TWO SEARCHES ONGOING IN THE OFFICE OF THE PROVOST AND VP ACADEMIC

The Provost's Office has resumed two Associate Vice-President search processes. Here's how you can participate.

Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Learning and Teaching (AVPLT)

Elizabeth Elle will complete her term as AVPLT on June 30, 2023 and we thank her for many valuable contributions to advancing learning and teaching across SFU as the inaugural AVPLT.

The search process includes an open forum on Wednesday, April 5, 1-2 p.m. (via Zoom). Consider attending and sharing with the search committee the challenges and opportunities the new AVPLT will face, and the important qualities and experience you feel the successful candidate should possess. To participate and learn more about the search, see the Provost and VPA website.

Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Academic (AVPA)

The search for the next AVPA was paused last year with the departure of VP Academic and Provost Catherine Dauvergne and an interim leadership model was established to support the Provost’s portfolio. We are now seeking applications for the AVPA role from internal SFU candidates by Wednesday, April 26, 2023. For more information, have a look at the Provost and VPA website.
