SUSTAINABILITY INNOVATOR EXPANDS IMPACT FROM CAMPUS TO COMMUNITY

Awarded for her approach to research and her unwavering commitment to community, SFU Sustainability research manager Kilim Park, has earned the 2022 Staff Achievement Award for Innovation.

Park led the creation of SFU’s first Living Lab program, which paired researchers with SFU staff to explore solutions to complex on-campus sustainability challenges. Recognized by other institutions as an example of best practice, her approach set the foundation for SFU’s partnership with the City of Burnaby to establish a Civic Innovation Lab expanding our impact from campus to community.

 

GRANT FUNDING SUPPORTS RESEARCH IN TRANS AND NON-BINARY YOUTH IN SPORTS

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) is profiling FHS students whose projects received funding from the 2022 SFU Student-Community Engaged Competition. The first of a three-part series is graduate student Martha Gumprich. 

Gumprich was awarded $2,000 to collaborate with a Kootenay based health and community program, Trans Connect. This funding will allow them to engage trans and non-binary youth in discussions about changes that could be made to make sport more welcoming.

Gumprich’s project will see them co-facilitating two sessions – alongside Nicola Hare of Trans Connect – for youth ages 15 to 18 in Nelson, BC and Castlegar, BC.

 

SFU GERONTOLOGY CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF RESEARCH AND EDUCATION ON AGING

The Department of Gerontology and Gerontology Research Centre (GRC) provides interdisciplinary training and engages in cutting-edge research to enhance the well-being of older adults while shaping the next generation of gerontologists. Four decades later, the department continues to equip students for success in the professional and academic fields of aging. 

 

SCHOLARLY IMPACT OF THE WEEK: WHO CONTROLS THE ALGORITHMS?

Who controls online data and algorithms and why does it matter? Interactive arts and technology lecturer Michael Filimowicz’s book series, Algorithms and Society, explores critical information issues including how governments, corporations and conspiracy theorists control and manipulate information.

In a message to the community this morning, SFU President Joy Johnson shared that the Board of Governors and SFU’s executive team are taking steps to ensure that everyone who works at SFU has regular access to information about what is on the minds of leadership.  

From this point forward, regular messages from the President, Chair of the Board of Governors and Provost and Vice-President Academic will update the community about topics of discussion at Board of Governors and Senate meetings. Items discussed at these two meetings represent matters of importance at the highest level of the institution.

The experts in Environmental Health and Safety have recently put together a Canvas module specifically focused on asbestos awareness and education. This training module is ideal for those who work, learn or conduct research on campus and are interested in learning more about this topic.

PREHISTORIC EGG HUNT

April 6,11,12 & 13 | Hosted by Department of Archaeology

Visit the Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology at SFU's Burnaby campus for a prehistoric egg hunt. Drop in any time between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 6, 11, 12, or 13 to participate and learn about how humans have interacted with eggs throughout our history.

 

HELP SHAPE THE MEDICAL SCHOOL

April 25 | Hosted by SFU Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue

There are various ways to be involved in the creation of SFU's medical school.  

April 25, 2023: 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. An in-person information session for students, faculty and staff at the Surrey campus. Join hosts Kris Magnusson, Chair, Workforce Working Group for the SFU Medical School and senior advisor to the Provost; Steve Dooley, executive director of SFU’s Surrey campus and Roger Strasser, interim dean, SFU Medical School for a high-level discussion about space, infrastructure and community integration. Register.

You can also participate by completing a survey, which is open to all SFU students, faculty and staff.
