CELEBRATING SUCCESS: KATE CARTY HONOURED FOR OUTSTANDING WORK PERFORMANCE 

Faculty of Health Sciences public health program coordinator Kate Carty is recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty with an SFU Staff Achievement Award. Kate supported the faculty's Council on Education for Public Health accreditation renewal, which included the coordination of large amounts of data and people to produce a self-report and facilitate an in-person site visit. In the past decade she has also coordinated hundreds of practicum placements for Master of Public Health students.

 

GLOBAL EXPERTS PROPOSE A PATH FORWARD IN GENERATING CLEAN POWER FROM WASTE ENERGY

Professor Vincenzo Pecunia from the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering has led a team of more than 100 internationally-recognized scientists in creating a comprehensive “roadmap” to guide global efforts to convert waste energy into clean power.

“With the rising global energy demand and the challenges posed by climate change, it is more urgent than ever to generate green energy to preserve our planet and sustain human development,” says Pecunia.

 

TAKING A BIG SWING WITH A GOLF CAREER AND START-UP BUSINESS

When Ryan Stolys graduates this summer, he’ll celebrate a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, a proud career with the SFU Golf Team, and a thriving start-up business that links to his passions as well as his coaches—who are partners in the venture.

Coast Capital Venture Connection program and the Charles Chang Institute for Entrepreneurship eCoop grant gave Matthew Steinbach, Kim Senecal and Stolys the tools to turn One Iota Performance from a personal system into a growing athletic training company.

SHARE YOUR FEEDBACK FOR THE EQUITY COMPASS DRAFT

We are excited to share the draft of the Equity Compass, SFU's first institutional EDI strategic plan. The Equity Compass is a clear and concise summary of equity themes and focus areas that will guide efforts across the university for the next five years (2023-2028). We invite you to share your feedback by April 7, 2023.

 

When did you last check your SFU account information and ensure it was up to date?

In some instances, such as a compromised account or forgetting your password, IT Services needs to reach out via your external email address. Please take a moment to log into your computing account profile and ensure your information is accurate. The updated information also gives you access to a new self-serve password reset option.

The Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute is inviting applications to its Collaborative Research Teams (CRT) program. The program is designed to leverage Canada’s statistical and data science expertise to tackle real-world applications in science, engineering, health and society while contributing to the training of the next generation of statistical scientists.

The program provides up to $210,000 over three years for projects led by statistical scientists that include faculty, postdocs and students from multiple disciplines. Submit your letter of intent by April 30, 2023.

HELP SHAPE THE MEDICAL SCHOOL

There are various ways to be involved in the creation of SFU's medical school.  

Attend an upcoming dialogue session: 

March 28, 2023: 1-3 p.m. An online research-focused session for faculty and graduate students. Hosted by Dugan O'Neil, Vice-President, Research and International. Register.

April 3, 2023: 12:30-2:30 p.m. An in-person information session, with lunch, for Indigenous students, faculty and staff and those who support Indigenous communities. Hosted by Chris Lewis, Director, Indigenous Initiatives and Reconciliation and Kris Magnusson, Faculty of Education dean pro tem. Register.

April 2023: An in-person information session for students, faculty and staff. Hosted by Kris Magnusson, Chair, Workforce Working Group for the SFU Medical School and senior advisor to the Provost; Steve Dooley, executive director of SFU’s Surrey campus and Roger Strasser, interim dean, SFU Medical School. Event details to be determined.

You can also participate by completing a survey, which is open to all SFU students, faculty and staff.

 

SKODEN INDIGENOUS FILM FESTIVAL

March 31 & April 1 | Hosted by School for the Contemporary Arts and the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology

You’re invited to a two-day, student-led film festival that exclusively features Indigenous filmmakers and creatives from across Canada.

Skoden Indigenous Film Festival was founded on the principles of truth and reconciliation by Carr Sappier (Wolastoqew) and Grace Mathisen in 2019. It is organized and led by students from SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts within the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology.

 

FRANCISCO-FERNANDO GRANADOS: WHO CLAIMS ABSTRACTION?

Immerse yourself in chromatic vibrations, hard-edged forms and graphic lines at this exhibit in the Teck Gallery at SFU's Vancouver campus (Harbour Centre). 

Francisco-Fernando Granados’ artistic practice queries the many ways in which spatial histories can be embodied. Teck Gallery, a space familiar to the artist during his time as a newcomer and student in Vancouver, is transformed through his installation of diptych murals positioned parenthetically around the waterfront view near the Port of Vancouver.
