2022 COMMUNITY-ENGAGED RESEARCH INITIATIVE AWARD WINNERS

The SFU Community-Engaged Research Initiative (CERi) Awards acknowledge those who have conducted exceptional community-engaged research that has contributed to positive change. This year, there is a diverse group of award recipients in five categories.

 

SFU'S SURREY CAMPUS HOSTS WESTERN CANADA'S LARGEST ENGINEERING COMPETITION

More than 200 students representing nine universities attended the Western Engineering Competition, which challenged undergraduate students to develop creative solutions to real-world problems. SFU engineering students Thomas Challis, Zachary Spencer, Adam Spelrem and Yu-Xing Lim won first place in the junior design category for their model of the future SFU Burnaby Campus gondola and advanced to the national competition in late February.

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

NEW COURSES FURTHER EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION COMMITMENT

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is launching two new courses this summer as part of its FASS Forward initiative. New courses, Introduction to Social Work Practice: Change Agency (FASS 212) and Exploring EDI: This is My Story (FASS 214), will provide meaningful opportunities for equity, diversity and inclusion education and aligns with SFU’s values and priorities.

 

GAME FOR EXPLORING RELATIONSHIPS DEVELOPED AT SFU

InterroBang is a new game co-created by the Sexual Violence Support and Prevention Office (SVSPO) and game developer Tucky Aalto. Designed for students to get to know themselves and others better, the game topics include relationships, consent, boundaries, cultural differences and sex positivity. Faculty and staff are welcome to borrow a set for their class or students in their department. Join the SVSPO either at MBC 2270 or the SUB for the game's launch party, at 12:00 p.m. on March 1.

IS THE MEDIA BECOMING LESS RACIST?: CHALLENGING COLONIAL NARRATIVES IN NON-FICTION WRITING

March 6 | Hosted by SFU Library

Join a conversation with Angela Sterritt, Brandi Morin and Anna McKenzie. These three Indigenous journalists will share how they have navigated newsrooms and created space for truth-telling about communities that have often been undermined by the media.

They will also share strategies to Indigenize traditionally colonial media spaces and give their perspectives on understanding and addressing the truth about colonial violence in Canadian media.

 

BLENDED LEARNING SPEAKER SERIES

March 6 | Hosted by Centre for Educational Excellence

Join Mary Power, the senior educational developer with the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Teaching Excellence, to discuss the use of student feedback in the design of blended learning courses. 

A small-group activity, accompanied by a light lunch, will follow the online presentation for those attending in person.

 

April 4 | Hosted by SFU Human Resources

This session will explore and deepen your individual awareness of bias, understand authenticity and build capacity for inclusion using an equity and anti-racist lens. It will also prepare you to continue developing your skills in anti-racism practices and provide opportunities to practice building safe professional spaces.
