ANNOUNCING THE SFU NEWSMAKER AWARD WINNERS

The latest recipients of SFU’s annual Newsmaker awards have been selected for their significant achievements in informing media stories and online communities on a diversity of topics.

SFU Psychology professor Lara Aknin, International Studies professor Darren Byler, City Program director Andy Yan, and Health Sciences communications manager Sharon Mah are being recognized for their contributions during 2022. This year, John Clague, professor emeritus of earth sciences, is being bestowed with the SFU Newsmaker Lifetime Achievement award.

NAVIGATING SILENCES AND FILLING GAPS IN SFU'S BLACK HISTORY

For psychology graduate student and Black Caucus research assistant Tiara Cash, investigating the university's past Black faculty, staff and students is part of the Black History Project work she is conducting. For months, she has been sifting through materials stored in SFU Archives dating back to the early days in the 1960s.

Her highlights include finding images of Desmond Tutu being awarded an honorary degree earlier this century from SFU.

MEET 2022 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AWARD WINNER

Congratulations to Paola Ardiles, senior lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences and special projects advisor to the Vice President People, Equity and Inclusion. This award is presented annually to an SFU staff or faculty member who has dedicated a lifetime of work to exemplary community engagement. A champion for community voice, Paola continues to advance community-engaged teaching, research and policy work in health through her reflexive, equity-centred pedagogy.

FCAT After School is a podcast project from SFU’s Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology. Current students sit down with alumni to explore their career journeys since graduation and gather advice for the next generation.

In this latest episode, Communications student Eric Militaru talks with SFU Communication alumnus Simi Sara. She shares her philosophy on furthering her career and how any student can learn to take their time and try out new things as they create their own journey.
