ENGINEER BREAKS DOWN GENDER BARRIERS AND SFU'S ENERGY EMISSIONS

With International Women’s Day this week on March 8, it’s a great time to highlight the accomplishments and achievements of Jaelim Jeon, a newly certified professional engineer and acting energy manager with Facilities Services. Recently, Jeon and her team were recognized for their hard work when SFU became the first university to win two awards from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineering BC Chapter.

SUPPORTING WOMEN-OWNED SOCIAL ENTERPRISES

SFU proudly supports local businesses like Tayybeh that provides employment opportunities for Syrian refugee women. Founded by Nihal Elwan in 2016, she wanted to do something to support the influx of refugees and to employ women who were new to Canada to ease their transition. SFU has partnered with Tayybeh since 2020 as a catering provider at various-sized events at all three campuses.

Over the past few years, SFU students from specific disciplines have consistently performed well in the annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition

In conversations with archaeology professor Dana Lepofsky and biological sciences professor Gerhard Gries, they revealed similar approaches to preparing students, skill-building and benefits beyond the competition.
