PEOPLE OF SFU: FLOOR PLANS AND FRIENDSHIPS

As analyst of space management systems at SFU’s Facilities Services, Irinel Filip maintains university floor plans and the rooms database.

The most enjoyable aspects of her job are the people she encounters and the stories she hears during her annual inventory of rooms across the three SFU campuses. 

 

FUNDING PROMOTES SOCIAL CONNECTEDNESS AMONGST OLDER ADULTS

A group of SFU Gerontology researchers, led by associate professor Atiya Mahmood, are meeting with older adults living in multi-unit rental housing as well as staff/management of these facilities to study social isolation and how it affects mental health. The data collected will be used to find ways to reduce programmatic barriers, enhance a sense of community and social connectedness.

 

PREVENTING VIOLENCE IN CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS

Gender, sexuality and women's studies professor Jennifer Marchbank works closely with communities about social justice issues. Her recent book, an open-access collaboration with other SFU colleagues and researchers at British Columbia Institute of Technology and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, explores the complexities of violence in relationships and offers insights and tools to combat this crisis.

 

IN MEMORIAM: DONALD HEDGES

It is with profound sadness that the Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology (BPK) announces the passing of Donald Hedges.

From 1984 through 2015, Donald taught BPK 241: Sports Injuries at SFU every semester. In that time, he instructed over 4,500 students, each of whom he saw as unique and precious.

GOING PAPERLESS: STEP TOWARDS A MORE SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS

SFU Facilities Services has implemented a mobile work order project that provides trades staff with iPhones or iPad Minis to access work orders electronically, reducing paper usage by 90% and improving customer service. This streamlines workflows and provides end-to-end transparency for customers.

 

A NEW LOOK FOR THE BURNABY CAMPUS COMMUNITY SHUTTLE

The redesign of the shuttle was intended to increase its visibility and to create a memorable SFU vehicle that users would instantly recognize.

The shuttle is accessible and free for anyone in the community, including students, faculty, staff and UniverCity residents.

The Centre for Educational Excellence invites you to share how technology has changed your understanding of teaching and learning in online, blended or face-to-face courses.

The deadline for proposals is February 6.
