SFU INVESTS IN VANCITY FUND FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND COMMUNITY PROJECTS

SFU has taken a major step forward in its socially responsible investment strategy by investing $10 million in the Vancity Community Investment Bank's Impact Guaranteed Investment Certificate. SFU is the first Canadian university to make this kind of investment, with the goal of making a meaningful and lasting impact on communities throughout Canada.

 

GLOBAL ENERGY MODELS DEMONSTRATE BEST USE OF RESOURCES

Sustainable energy engineering professor Taco Niet is an expert in community-centred climate innovation. He and his team at the ΔE+ (Delta-E-plus) research group collaborate with industry, government and academia on projects that move energy systems toward a more sustainable future.

 

IN MEMORIAM: DOROTHY CHUNN

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy E. Chunn, professor emerita of sociology. Dorothy was a prolific socio-legal scholar, an inspiring teacher, a devoted feminist and a cherished colleague.

INTRODUCING THE NEW DEAN OF SFU’S FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

The new year begins with a new leader, Laurel Weldon, at the helm of SFU's largest faculty. As a distinguished professor at SFU, Weldon has a great deal of experience and expertise in the field of political science. As a scholar and political scientist, her research focuses on the role of social movements, comparative public policy, intersectionality, violence against women as well as diversity and inclusion.

 

SFU ANNOUNCES NEW CHIEF SAFETY AND RISK OFFICER

Galib Bhayani is thrilled to join SFU, bringing an inclusive, community-centred approach to safety and risk management. In addition to a long career in community public safety, Galib has a deep academic background, having completed a doctorate in policing and community studies with a focus on police accountability, governance and reform from London Metropolitan University.

 

This 10-week series is for instructors interested in redesigning a course for blended delivery, starting in fall 2023 or later. Course participants will also receive exclusive access to blended learning experts and funding to present their work at conferences.

MEET AWARD-WINNING JOURNALIST ANGELA STERRITT

Join the celebration of SFU Library’s 2023 Non-Fiction Writer in Residence, Angela Sterritt, with an evening of conversation hosted by journalist and writer Michelle Cyca. Sterritt’s decade-long career has focused on investigative reporting and coverage of Indigenous issues, earning her several awards in journalism. She is also recognized as a motivational speaker for her TED talk on breaking stereotypes of Indigenous people and author of her new book, Unbroken, which will be published this May.

As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month at SFU, the Vancouver campus is pleased to collaborate with the Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office on their next Lunch and Learn event. Participants will learn what constitutes sexual violence at SFU, the fundamentals of a supportive response, the various campus and community support services available and the importance of self-care for those who receive a disclosure.

Join CBC/Radio-Canada President Catherine Tait and guest panelists for a conversation about building trust and protecting our democracy. This important discussion will touch on journalism and reporting, building relationships with the audience, online safety and public policy.

 

CAROLE ITTER'S EXHIBITION: PLEASE MEET THE GEESE WHO HAVE LIVED HERE FOREVER

You are invited to the opening reception of this exhibition at the Audain Gallery on January 19 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. The set is built entirely from materials salvaged from the artist's East Vancouver neighbourhood and is a reflection of Itter's irreverence toward conventional 'high art' value systems and her repudiation of settler culture's rapacious overconsumption.
