UNIVERSITY NEWS

August 1 is Emancipation Day, a day set aside to recognize Canada's history of slavery, anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination. In honour of the day, here are some highlights celebrating the success of Black community members at SFU as well as showcasing work being done to support them:

Henry Daniel is a professor of dance, performance studies and new technology at SFU's School for the Contemporary Arts. As Daniel retires in August, Black students at SFU are praising his career and achievements as well as his impact on students and the Black community at SFU.

SFU is working with many partner groups to create a long-term, permanent support service for Black students, upholding commitments to redress anti-Black racism and foster Black inclusion. “Having this sort of community adds immense value to the student experience,” says Shauna-Kaye Brown, a graduate student and member of the Black Caucus.

PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE LEADS THE TECH WORLD

Beedie School of Business proudly announces Andrew Harries' induction into the BC Tech Innovators Hall of Fame. Harries co-founded Sierra Wireless in 1993 which saw exponential success over the years, serving as an inspiration to aspiring tech entrepreneurs. Currently, Harries is the Tom Foord Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the university, shaping the next tech generation.

PART OF THE BIGGER PICTURE

The story behind SFU’s newest mural stretches far beyond its home in Robert C. Brown Hall. This mural is just one of three new enhancements to SFU’s Department of Geography made possible by a generous legacy gift left by geography alumnus Kenneth Cawker. Designed by Squamish artist Aaron “Splash” Nelson-Moody, the colourful display represents the teaching of how salmon came to the nation’s waterways.
