SIX WAYS SFU REDUCES GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

SFU’s Climate Change Accountability Report for 2022 was recently released. The university made remarkable strides, reporting a 52 per cent reduction in emissions in 2022. This achievement is even more notable considering that SFU's physical footprint has expanded by approximately 30 per cent since it began annual greenhouse gas reporting in 2007.

 

NISGA'A POLE TO RETURN TO THE NASS VALLEY AFTER 94 YEARS

The Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government and National Museums Scotland announce that the House of Ni’isjoohl memorial pole will return home to the Nass Valley this September, in a historic moment for reconciliation. The rematriation of the pole is the result of a year-long discussion and close collaboration between the Nisg̱a’a Nation and the museum. SFU education professor Amy Parent was among Indigenous leaders who traveled to Scotland in August 2022 to discuss the rematriation.

 

GRADUATE STUDENT EXHIBITS WORK AT H.R MACMILLAN SPACE CENTRE 

Interactive Arts & Technology PhD candidate John Desnoyers-Stewart created an interactive art installation: Star-Stuff: a way for the universe to know itself. Star-Stuff is a hybrid virtual reality artwork cre­ated to remind immersants of their fun­da­men­tal con­nec­tion to human­ity and the universe.

 

A new report from the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) found content labels help identify social media misinformation, but strategies to mitigate its effects lack consensus. IPIE vice-chair and SFU professor Wendy Chun stresses the need for scientific access to social media data to develop these strategies. IPIE serves policymakers and more by improving the global information environment through interdisciplinary research and assessments.

The Sexual Violence Support & Prevention (SVSPO) office invites the SFU community to participate in their annual Consent Matters campaign. Submissions are due by August 21 and will be shared on the SVSPO’s Consent Matters page as well as through social media channels

The Lorne Davies Complex renewal project work continues. Beginning August 8, East Gym will temporarily be closed to the community during the duration of project, following previous updates and closures. Please take extra care while walking around the construction zone and follow signage directions and route changes.
