TWO SFU MEMBERS APPOINTED TO THE ORDER OF CANADA

Donald MacPherson and Jeff Reading from the Faculty of Health Sciences were honoured for their outstanding contributions to public health policy, research and advocacy. MacPherson has worked tirelessly for harm reduction and evidence-based approaches to drug policy reform. Reading has made groundbreaking contributions to Indigenous health nationally and globally.

 

WILDFIRE AND ECOSYSTEM SCIENTIST LEADS NEW RESEARCH GROUP

Sophie Wilkinson and her team will study wildfire behaviour, impacts and the management of peatlands. The Fire and Ecosystems Research Lab's establishment responds to the urgent need for scientific research and collaboration to mitigate the effects of climate change-induced wildfires and protect ecosystems and communities.

 

SFU ALUMNI MAKING THEIR MARK IN B.C.

BC Business announced this year's Top 30 Under 30 award recipients who collectively represent a great future for the province. The list featured six stellar SFU alumni paving the way in health, education, business and beyond and highlighting their ingenuity in their chosen fields.

 

ILLUMINATING VIRAL PROTEIN SHEDS NEW LIGHT ON TREATMENT

SFU microbiologist Mark Paetzel and his research team used the brightest light in Canada to study the atomic details of viral protein. Their work sheds new light on potential treatments.

 

Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment for many patients but many cancer drugs can cause cells to mutate and become harder to treat. SFU molecular biology and biochemistry researcher Mani Larijani is exploring new ways to address this problem.

NEW ASSOCIATE VICE-PRESIDENT ACADEMIC

Peter Hall, an urban studies professor, has been appointed as the new vice-provost and associate vice-president academic, effective September 1. Hall looks forward to contributing to SFU's academic mission and promoting the university's identity as a place where students learn from outstanding researchers.

 

SFU's recently released 2022/23 Finance Annual Report addresses community concerns about the accounting surplus found in the balance sheet. The report clarifies that the surplus of $22 million reflects committed project expenses still to be incurred due to timing and delays rather than available cash. Additionally, the report highlights the projected revenue shortfall for 2023/24 due to factors like softening international enrollment and limited tuition increases and emphasizes the need for cost-reduction measures and revenue-generating opportunities.

 

Calling all artists, crafters, entrepreneurs, musicians and performers to showcase their work to the Burnaby Mountain community at the upcoming StreetFest! 2023 happening on September 15th. Application deadline is July 15th, 2023.
