RECORD-HIGH ATTENDANCE AT EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION BBQ

Yesterday, approximately 2,000 SFU faculty and staff members came together to celebrate their hard work and enjoy a meal together. Since 2006, the annual tradition has grown in popularity and it was an opportunity to take a much deserved break.

From drug policy research to accounting, global health data to economic inequality, these nine exceptional researchers are breaking barriers and changing the world with their discoveries.  

 

SFU FOOD LEADERS SHARE SUSTAINABILITY GOALS AT UNITED NATIONS SUMMIT

SFU's food programming team leaders are in Rome for the United Nations Food Systems Summit to highlight their innovative approach in meeting UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Sid Mehta, Chef Steph Baryluk and Tammara Soma along with Chartwells Canada (Burnaby campus food service provider) are showcasing their commitment to sustainable consumption and production, which includes increasing the current local food sourcing from 40 per cent to 50 per cent. 

 

SEMESTER IN DIALOGUE TO TACKLE URGENT HEALTHCARE ISSUES

Next semester, award-winning professor and fellow Diane Finegood will take students on an immersive, cohort-based journey through pressing healthcare topics such as planetary health, toxic drugs and medical technology. Discover what this course may have in common with SFU’s developing medical school.

ANNOUNCING NEW HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICE DIRECTOR

Megan Tweedie, an advocate for human rights, employment and public interest law, will join SFU as Director, Human Rights Office on August 8, reporting into the University Secretary portfolio. 

 

ANNOUNCING THE 2023-2024 DATA FLUENCY FACULTY FELLOWS

The Mellon Foundation and the Digital Democracies Institute (DDI) are sponsoring fellowships for two SFU faculty members. Susan Erikson and Victoria Thomas will spend a semester at the DDI, researching the societal impacts of mis- and dis-information. Fellows will receive $40,000 CAD for course release and research funds, and have access to DDI facilities.

 

The university welcomes Christeen Livingstone, an experienced case manager specializing in Conflict Analysis and Management and trauma-informed practice. In this newly developed role, Livingstone will provide support and advice to staff of the university with respect to workplace concerns and complaints. The role will also support faculty-related or student-related concerns.

 

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

Founded in 2006, the Friends of Simon program utilizes the expertise of SFU's Faculty of Education to recruit, train and place university students as tutor-mentors in the Lower Mainland's school and community sites. Targeting newcomer, refugee and at-risk students, the program has been successful for its 12 years. Recently, the Faculty of Education interviewed Kanwal Neel to reflect on his experiences as he steps down from his position as one of its coordinators.

CELEBRATING PRIDE WITH SFU

August 6 | Hosted by Vancouver Pride Society

Community-building events such as the 2023 Vancouver Pride Parade are another step towards building visibility for our gender and sexually diverse communities and providing a safe welcoming space for all. Enjoy the parade and cheer on the SFU Pride Parade group with other SFU community members in an informal meetup at David Lam Park. A handful of spots are still available to members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community at SFU to participate in the parade walking group.
