WHAT'S IN A NAME? HONORING THE LEGACY OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

Guided by the 34 Calls to Action set out in the SFU Aboriginal Reconciliation Council Walk this Path with Us report, the Indigenous Naming Committee and SFU Family is steering various revitalization projects to name or reclaim Indigenous names for the university's campuses.

REACHING FOR THE STARS WITH EARLY CAREER AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

Joanna Woo is an outstanding lecturer in the physics department and an outreach enthusiast for Starry Nights, SFU's weekly stargazing parties. She constantly challenges herself and experiments with new ideas to deliver the best learning experience for her students. In her newly created course, PHYS 391 Observational Astrophysics, Woo incorporates the use of the SFU Trottier Observatory, which is also managed by her.  

 

SCHOLARLY IMPACT OF THE WEEK: HARVESTING AMBIENT ENERGY TO POWER THE FUTURE

SFU Sustainable Energy Engineering professor Vincenzo Pecunia led a group of over 100 international scientists to develop the "Roadmap on Energy Harvesting Materials." The roadmap offers guidance on the most promising directions in energy-harvesting technologies to help meet the growing demand for clean energy.

 

RECOGNIZING THE POWER OF INNOVATION

SFU Beedie's Mitacs Invention to Innovation (i2I) Skills Training finale showcased the entrepreneurial skills training and the impact of science innovators. Five finalists were selected from among the three regional cohorts and 11 national learning groups whose participants are working on research translation in a broad range of fields including renewable energy, advanced materials, biotech, pharmaceuticals, digital health, robotics, advanced manufacturing, agritech, agribio and architecture.

  • Remember to stay hydrated
  • Follow your local municipality's extreme heat guidelines, including any urgent weather alerts
  • Download the SFU Snap app and use the room finder function to search "drinking water" stations on campus
  • Check out more resources and a list of buildings with cooling systems
 

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CONVOCATION VIP REGALIA ROOM | JUNE 6 - 9

Assistance is required in the VIP Regalia Room, helping faculty, deans and dignitaries get robed and ready for each convocation ceremony and/or assisting them in returning their gowns after completion of the ceremonies.

There are numerous shifts available through each day. Please join us for this unique volunteer opportunity.

 

The search for a new AVPA is at the candidate interview stage. Faculty and staff are warmly invited to attend the following open forums to hear from the candidates and ask questions:

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITY AWARDS

Nominations for the Chancellor's Distinguished Service Award (CDSA) and President's Distinguished Community Leadership Award (DCLA) are now being accepted. The CDSA recognizes and celebrates individuals and organizations for their outstanding commitment and service to the university. The President’s DCLA honours individuals or organizations for their distinguished contribution to the public good within their community. The submission deadline is May 22.

A list of actions and resources, developed in consultation with the SFU Multifaith Centre and Hillel BC, is available for Jewish members of the SFU community in the link above.

BELONGING AND INCLUSION IN OUR CLASSROOMS

May 15 | Hosted by Centre for Educational Excellence

Instructors from across SFU will share how they are applying anti-racist, linguistically responsive and neurodiverse-aware teaching practices to create inclusive online learning spaces. Keynote speaker Bryan Dewsbury (Florida International University) and plenary speaker Jaclyn Stewart (UBC) will also share their work developing and assessing equity-based teaching practices.

 

MAPPING CLIMATE JUSTICE FRONTLINES IN VANCOUVER

May 17 | Hosted by SFU Community-Engaged Research Initiative and UBC Centre for Climate Justice

Community leaders, youth activists and Indigenous Elders will share their insights on how climate change is embedded in other systemic crises and oppressions, and the bridges that need to be built to ensure justice is centred in all climate action. You will not want to miss out on this insightful conversation moderated by UBC professors Naomi Klein and Rafi Arefin.
