UNIVERSITY NEWS

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS IS KEY TO SUCCESS

Economics advisor Azam Bhatti shares the highlights of his career, his approach to student advising and the initiatives that earned him a 2023 workplace excellence award. Bhatti set out to make the department more approachable by going into classrooms to introduce himself and offer helpful program advice rather than waiting for students to come to him.

SETTING HER SIGHTS ON OLYMPIC GOLD

Congratulations to biophysics student Josipa Kafadar who is representing Canada at the Pan American Olympic qualifier for taekwondo this week. She just earned an invite to the Olympics happening in Paris this summer. Balancing university studies with training as an elite athlete means a busy schedule and Kafadar credits the discipline she has developed as an athlete for helping to keep on track.

When Morgan Peequaquat transferred to SFU, she didn’t expect to help plan a film festival in her second semester. Her spontanenous decision to enroll in a contemporary arts course led to her instrumental planning role for the recent Skoden Indigenous Film Festival. Peequaquat is grateful to contribute to something bigger than a regular classroom environment.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

CLEANING SERVICE ADJUSTMENTS

Since the pandemic, many habits and use of space have changed across the university, particularly in the use of office space where staff work hybrid schedules. Starting this month, SFU will be modifying cleaning services in low traffic areas, reducing the frequency of emptying individual office waste/recycling bins and decreasing paper towel use in washroom facilities.
