SFU RE-APPOINTS PRESIDENT JOY JOHNSON FOR A SECOND TERM

The university’s board of governors has unanimously re-appointed Joy Johnson to a further five-year term as president and vice-chancellor of Simon Fraser University, following an extensive re-appointment review and community consultation.

“The Board is very pleased with Joy’s performance to date and her ambitious plans for the university,” said Angie Lamarsh, chair of the SFU Board of Governors. “We are confident that she is the right person to carry out SFU’s vision of being a leading research university, advancing an inclusive and sustainable future.”

 

BUILDING CONNECTIONS FOR BLACK FLOURISHING

SFU's theme for Black History Month this February takes inspiration from the Scarborough Charter and SFU's own commitment to inclusive excellence. Read stories from the Black community, attend events and discover activities from groups including SFU's Equity Office and Students of Caribbean and African Ancestry (SOCA).

 

INVESTIGATING THE RISK OF DEMENTIA

SFU’s Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology (INN) has received nearly $750,000 in funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to investigate brain resilience in ageing and dementia. The data collected through this new project will help refine modelling by allowing researchers to identify key biological and social risk factors for dementia as well as more effective and personalized ways to intervene.

POTENTIAL TRANSIT STRIKE JOB ACTION FEB. 3-5

CUPE 4500 has given notice that if a deal is not reached by 12:01 a.m., Saturday, February 3, their members will withdraw from services for 72 hours (Saturday - Monday). This will result in bus and SeaBus service being suspended again. 

Reminder that faculty and staff will be expected to continue working during this time. If you normally rely on transit and this strike action will impact your commute to campus, please plan alternative arrangements. For employees who cannot get to a campus and who work on a hybrid schedule, please talk to your supervisor about possible hybrid arrangements. Employees who are unable to attend work or perform work remotely will have the option to take vacation, other paid leave entitlements or unpaid leave. Faculty have also been asked to prepare to move courses online, provide asynchronous content or cancel classes for Feb. 3-5 if the strike action moves forward.

SFU MEMBER APPOINTED AS B.C. SENIORS' ADVOCATE

Dan Levitt, adjunct professor of gerontology, has been appointed as the province's second seniors' advocate. In this role, Levitt will address systemic issues that affect seniors and improve the accessibility of care for older adults in British Columbia.

 

The Provost and VPA is launching a search for the next Dean of Libraries and University Librarian. In accordance with SFU Policy A13.05: Search Committees for Deans, a search committee is being formed and the SFU community is invited to consider opportunities to participate.

The Senate Office coordinates faculty and staff elections for search committee members. Gwen Bird concludes her second term in this role on September 30, 2024.

Attend this free online event to learn the facts and fictions of SOGI, how to resist harmful messaging, and why the rights of the LGBTQ2S+ community must be protected.

WRITING (AGAINST) VANCOUVER

February 9 | Hosted by SFU English

This free event, moderated by Sean Cranbury, will spotlight the work of Vancouver-based short story writers Sam Wiebe and Carleigh Baker. Wiebe was the Ellen & Warren Tallman Writer in Residence in fall 2023 and attendees will also hear the work of writers who consulted with him.
