BUILDING CONNECTIONS FOR BLACK FLOURISHING

Black History Month presents a great opportunity to learn about the history of Black communities at the local, international and global level. Prof-Collins Ifeonu likes to celebrate this month because promoting Black joy is important. "Too often our stories are written, interpreted and illustrated through a lens of pain and suffering. Please do not forget that we are a joyous, loving and affable people."

CONNECTING THROUGH FOOD

Chef Stephanie Baryluk created the Rooted Indigenous Foods Program and Rooted Menu, a program dedicated to showcasing Indigenous cuisine at SFU's Dining Commons. Based on Gwich’in community’s knowledge passed by her Elders from the small Western Arctic community of Teetl’it Zheh (Fort McPherson), Baryluk's efforts have been taking her around the world.

A group of SFU School of International Studies students excelled in a real-world based competition to tackle a hypothetical major hybrid attack and military-political threat. The event challenged the team to critically engage with global issues and swiftly collaborate to devise actionable solutions. Teams presented to a judging panel and SFU's teams finished in first and third place.
