UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGES AND JOYS OF BEING BLACK

Originally from Jamaica, Cornel Bogle's research focus is Black literary friendships, networks of support among writers from the Caribbean and Black literary traditions and those who engage with them. Bogle has an immense amount of joy when teaching students about Black diasporic, Caribbean and postcolonial literatures and cultures.

 

DEVELOPING AI TO UNDERSTAND LIGHT IN PHOTOGRAPHS

Despite significant progress in developing AI systems that can understand the physical world like humans do, researchers have struggled with modelling a certain aspect of our visual system: the perception of light.


SFU computing science professor, Yagiz Aksoy and his students, Chris Careaga and S. Mahdi H. Miangoleh, have developed a powerful computer interface that has AI-driven editing capabilities that could save Hollywood millions during post-production.

 

ANNOUNCING THE 2023 WARREN GILL AWARD FOR COMMUNITY IMPACT WINNER

Congratulations to the latest award recipient, SFU critical legal geographer Nicholas Blomley. Having spent the past three decades engaged in research and advocacy related to local issues, Blomley is focussed on those concerning marginalization, exclusion and poverty. He is currently researching the challenges that precariously-housed people face in securing and controlling their personal possessions.

T4/T4A TAX FORMS NOW AVAILABLE

It's tax season and 2023 T4/T4A tax forms are now available for download by logging into SFU myINFO with your computing ID and password. If you have issues viewing the form(s), ensure the SFUVPN connection is active if accessing from off campus and disable pop-up blockers in the web browser. PROPOSALS NOW BEING ACCEPTED

Faculty or staff are invited to submit entries for initiatives that employ rigorous, principled community engagement to advance the goals of SFU’s Strategic Community Engagement Plan (CEI) and one or more of the priorities in What’s Next: The SFU Strategy. The CEI considers community engagement to be an inclusive approach to teaching, research and scholarship that is characterized by deep attention to relationships.


Up to $100,000 will be awarded this year, in grants of up to $10,000 each. Deadline to apply: April 5, 2024.
