RESEARCHING SPINAL CORD INJURIES AND ADVANCING PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

Numaira Obaid, a postdoctoral fellow in the Neurospine Biomechanics Lab, is investigating how age-related degeneration impacts geriatric spinal injuries and hopes her findings will help to develop better fall-prevention strategies. “As more adults work later in life or seek to prolong independent living, they are more susceptible to falls,” says Obaid.

CREATING LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES TO STRENGTHEN GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

In September, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) celebrated as Professor Emeritus A.H. Somjee gifted the Department of Political Science a professorship through a generous bequest gift in his will. At the launch event, FASS also welcomed Shivaji Mukherjee as the inaugural professor in Indian Political Development. This opportunity to scholars, like Mukherjee, will allow research to bridge international critical thought.

The faculty will offer new undergraduate classes in Brazilian-Portuguese language, literature and Brazilian culture. The inaugural lecturer will arrive in the early months of 2024 and enhance SFU's long-standing history of multilingualism. There will also be new student exchanges and other university-bridging opportunities.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

BE PREPARED FOR WINTER WEATHER

Periods of rain and snow are in the forecast this week. Before you travel to and from the university be sure to check weather updates, transit and road conditions, drive slowly and ensure your vehicle is winter ready. Dress weather appropriate to keep warm and wear insulated boots with traction to prevent slip and falls.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Do you know someone who is doing work that challenges complacency? Nominate a student, a staff member, an SFU academic or a member of the community at large. The recipient is selected for decidedly unconventional and distinctly untraditional work that provokes a wide audience. The award recipient will receive $5,000 and make a public presentation. Nominations are now being accepted and the deadline is February 15.

SFU is upgrading email protocols to promote a safer environment and align with industry-wide regulations starting February 1, 2024. These changes affect anyone who currently forwards their SFU email to an external email provider or uses a maillist that contains non-SFU emails.

As we begin a new year and another semester, learn safety best practices of what to do in an emergency. Safety & Risk Services provides a variety of security resources and programs to keep SFU a safe space for everyone.

Starting this week, Bennett Library is undergoing water protection work on the upper exterior of the building. Noise disruption will be heard around the Library, including Convocation Mall and the west side of the AQ. There will also be a no-parking zone on Halpern Lane to accommodate construction vehicles.
