MEET THE 2023 STAFF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENTS

From Facilities Services to the Indigenous Student Centre, this year's Staff Achievement Award winners are outstanding. They have made incredible contributions to their communities and helped to transform the SFU experience for all those who learn and work here.

UNCOVERING THE RISK OF EXTINCTION FOR ONE-IN-SEVEN DEEPWATER SPECIES

Startling new findings from an eight-year study, with SFU biological sciences professor Nick Dulvy and an international group of researchers, were recently published in the journal Science. Sharks and rays maintain their buoyancy by having a fatty liver. However this fat is highly prized and widely used in cosmetics, nutrient supplements and for medicines as well as some food delicacies.

TRANSFORMING THE UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE

SFU staff member Tracy Farrell MacRae shares her experience serving on the Board while pursuing her Executive MBA and shares her advice for anyone considering getting involved. The election process is now in full swing for the Board of Governors (BoG) student representative roles.

Last fall, more than 35 student-led teams submitted ideas for working with community partners on important issues. The winning entries for SFU's Student-Community Engagement competition featured programs that include arts-based engagement and technological innovation. Their work addresses food security, migrant history, intergenerational knowledge-keeping, gender-based violence, the toxic drug crisis and homelessness.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

Starting in the summer of 2024, SFU Mail will be moving to Exchange Online (EXO). To align with EXO's rigorous cybersecurity and privacy standards and to ensure the best performance, all external tools critical for teaching, research and business must meet modern internet security and privacy requirements to work with SFU Mail.
