Jonathan Borwein dies at 65

It is with great sadness that I share with you that our former Department colleague and SFU Mathematics Adjunct Professor Jonathan Borwein passed away yesterday. Those who knew him will recall the positive influence and recognition that he brought to the Department, including key leadership and founding roles in CECM, PIMS, Compute Canada and other initiatives in Canada, Australia and worldwide.

Jon joined SFU in 1993 as Shrum Chair. His arrival, together with that of his brother Peter, generated a lot of enthusiasm and energy in the Department. Jon was an amazingly creative and productive mathematician with almost 500 publications to his credit. He mentored many young researchers. Jon was an avid reader, well versed in many genres; he loved music and had a great sense of humour.

Our thoughts and prayers are with John’s wife Judith, his three daughters, his extended family and many friends.
