Former SFU Math Postdocs awarded Medals from The Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications in 2018
The winners of the 2018 medals of The Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications have been announced, and include two former members of the SFU Department of Mathematics.
Shuxing Li won one of the two 2018 Kirkman Medals, awarded to “recognize excellent research by Fellows or Associate Fellows of the ICA early in their research career, as evidenced by an excellent body of published research”. Shuxing was a postdoctoral fellow in our Department working with Jonathan Jedwab during the academic year 20162017, and is currently a Humboldt Research Fellow at the University of Magdeburg, Germany. He will return to our Department as a PIMS Postdoctoral Fellow for two years beginning in November 2019.
KaiUwe Schmidt won the only 2018 Hall Medal, awarded to "recognize extensive quality research with substantial international impact by Fellows of the ICA in midcareer.” Kai was a postdoctoral fellow in our Department working with Jonathan Jedwab from 2008 to 2011, and is now (the equivalent of) an Associate Professor at the University of Paderborn, Germany.
Both medallists will receive their medals at conferences hosted by our Department this summer: Shuxing will be presented with the Kirkman Medal at the CanaDAM 2019 conference in May 2019, and Kai will be presented with the Hall Medal at the Fq14 conference in June 2019.
