VPR USRA

PLEASE NOTE: APPLICATION DEADLINES ARE NOT YET KNOWN

These VPR USRA awards are valued at $4,500 for a minimum of sixteen weeks. The University will supplement this amount from other sources making salaries of at least $5,852 total plus benefits. These awards are provided to encourage undergraduate student interest in research and in graduate studies.

NB:  If students do not meet the eligibility criteria for an NSERC USRA, they may be eligible for a VPR USRA. For example, international students, or students wishing to work with a faculty member whose research support is not from NSERC.

  • The SFU VPR quota for 2017 is (TBA) total with (x) allocated to the Math Dept.

Who Should Apply

Students must have obtained a cumulative average of at least B- over the entire period of undergraduate studies. Please note that this average is a minimum requirement and the cut-off point is often higher.

  • be an SFU undergraduate student;
  • have completed all the course requirements of at least the first year of university study;
  • have obtained, over the previous year of study, a cumulative average of at least 2.67;
  • not have held more than 3 USRAs (including NSERC USRAs) previously;
  • not have started a program of graduate studies
  • Female students or students of aboriginal descent are particularly encouraged to apply.

NB:  Full information can be found on the Dean of Graduate Studies website:  NSERC USRA & VPR Sciences.   In the event of discrepancy in information between the Math Website and the Dean of Graduate Studies, DGS will be deemed to be correct.

  • Interested eligible students should contact the supervisor with regards to the project they would like to work on.
  • Fill out the Application Form
  • Submit the application form with a cover letter indicating the project(s) being applied for, a copy of your unofficial transcript & 2 letters of reference to the Department of Mathematics.
  • NB: Reference letters can be emailed to JoAnne (mcs@sfu.ca) and must arrive at the Math Department prior to 25 January, 2017.  Please have reference letters addressed to:
