NSERC USRA
NSERC has recently announced the 2012-13 NSERC USRA Competition. These awards are intended to encourage undergraduate students to undertake research in the natural sciences and engineering. Departments may use this program as a recruitment tool to attract senior undergraduate students to pursue graduate studies at SFU.

The value of the awards remains at $4,500 over the 16-week period of the award. NSERC requires that all students holding USRAs receive a supplement of at least 25% of the value of the award. NSERC emphasizes that this mandatory supplement is a minimum value; any supplement above this level may be set at the department's discretion. Thus, the minimum additional salary supplement which must be provided at the departmental level is $1,125 (over the 16-week period).

Student Eligibility: NSERC USRA

Full eligibility criteria are outlined at NSERC USRA guidelines.

Student Eligibility: VPR USRA Sciences

If students do not meet the eligibility criteria for an NSERC USRA, they may be eligible for a VPR USRA. (For example, international students, or students wishing to work with a faculty member whose research support is not from NSERC). All rules for holding the award remain the same and eligibility criteria and application process can be found on the Graduate Studies website. Note that non-SFU students are not eligible to apply.

If eligible for both awards, students should apply for the NSERC USRA as they will then be considered for the VPR USRA. Students who are not eligible for the NSERC USRA should apply for the VPR USRA, if eligible for that program.

NSERC USRA applicants must submit their online application to NSERC and a paper copy to the MBB office by 3:00 pm, Tuesday, January 24, 2012. VPR USRA applicants must submit their paper application to the MBB office by the deadline.
