He is currently a professor in the Department of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, at Simon Fraser University, Canadian Research Chair in Genomics, an Honorary Associate Professor of the Department of Medical Genetics, University of British Columbia .

Dr. Baillie received his BSc in Zoology from the University of British Columbia (1966). He did a Master's degree with Dr. David Suzuki in Genetics at the same University (1967). He received a Doctorate in Genetics from the University of Connecticut in the laboratory of Dr. Art Chovnick (1971). In 1971 he started his post-doctoral training with Nobel laureate Sydney Brenner at the MRC in Hills Road, Cambridge. He left Cambridge to take up a position in the Department of Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC, Canada in 1974.

He is a member of the Canadian Genetics Society, the American Genetics Society and the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies.  He has been awarded the Genetics Society of Canada's "Award of Excellence", as well as a "Medal of Merit" from the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, International Society for Heart Research.

Baillie Laboratory Research Projects

 

The distribution and role of lethals (essential genes) in the C. elegans genome 

- NSERC has funded this work continuously for 33 years.
 

the transcriptional networks that regulate excretory cell development and function in C. elegans

- CIHR funded research. This work is in the second year of a four year grant.

C. elegans Gene Expression Project (CEII)

- Genome Canada/Genome BC funded.  Members investigating C. elegans gene expression using promoter::GFP fusions and serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE).
