Mechatronic systems engineering professor Farid Golnaraghi’s team developed Shield-X, a micro-engineered membrane that can be applied to a helmet to minimize head injuries and prevent concussions.

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has selected Shield-X to be featured as a part of its NSERC Innovation Showcase series, which celebrates innovative research across Canada.

Come see the Shield-X technology for yourself at the SFU Science Rendezvous event on Saturday, May 13 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the Burnaby campus.

“Attendees will learn about the latest advancements in helmet design and accessories to mitigate the risk of head injury and concussion,” says Daniel Abram, who is a postdoctoral fellow in Golnaraghi’s research lab and the chief technology officer of Shield-X Technology Inc.

Abram will be displaying three versions of their technology:

• BX-E: The world’s first functional decal that diverts impact
• BX-I: The first invisible membrane that is installed inside a helmet and reduces the twisting force applied to the brain during impact
• BX-C: Their first wearable ultra-thin cap that can be worn under any helmet to enhance the performance of it
