MSE alumni and student startup team won two prestigious awards at the 12th Coast Capital Venture Competition on April 18, 2023. Hanieh Zahiremami (MSE’2021, second from the right in the photo) won the Alumni Founder Award and Raaj Chatterjee (MSE’2019, now a PhD student at MSE, second from the left in the photo) won the Research and Development Award, each of $2,500.

Having a common passion of applying mechatronics concepts to neuroscience applications, Hanieh and Raj founded Edee Care which brings together artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and medical hardware to detect, predict, and prevent seizures. Their mission is to help people with chronic conditions take control of their lives, starting with epilepsy.  Epilepsy affects 1 in 26 people at least once in their lives, and there is still no accurate way to predict when they will happen.

Inspiration to start Edee Care started by seeing the challenges people with epilepsy face and their clients, team, and friends, and continue to inspire them to develop better solutions for this underserved condition. People with epilepsy lack a device they can use to manage their seizures, which is why it was essential to take the necessary steps and build a comprehensive solution from the bottom up. Hanieh and Raaj believes that everyone deserves to live a healthy and fulfilling life, regardless of their medical condition.

The Edee Care team received mentorship from Drs. Shokoufi, Golnaraghi, Rakhsha, and Farzan in the form of feedback, connections, and foundational knowledge in neurotechnology.

“Keep innovating and talking to your customers, supporters, and mentors. Don't be afraid to think big and take the first step. The journey of entrepreneurship is challenging but also rewarding, and we believe that everyone has the potential to make a positive impact on the world” – wisdom from Hanieh and Raaj for future graduates and entrepreneurs.
