Let's try the RLSP: A capital gains tax deferral is plutocratic; the new Conservative finance minister should bring back the party's proposed Registered Lifetime Savings Plan that would benefit low and moderate earners, and society generally.

SFU Media Matters Report Tuesday February 15, 2011:

Mary Gerges, a born-in-Egypt Master's Student in SFU;s School of Public Policy, was on CKNW's The World Today show with host Jon McComb. He began by asking about Egypt's Coptic Christians, who make up 10% of the population.

Gerges: "Prior to last week, everybody was really, really scared about what it would mean, and the fear of the Muslim Brotherhgood taking over. . . . But I think there have been a couple of really, really hopeful things that have come up in the last week that have really shown that there might be . . . a good future for the Copts and for the people in general of Egypt after Mubarak's reign. . . .

"The first thing was Copts and non-Copts, Muslims, people from all sorts of ideological backgrounds and religious backgrounds, standing together in revolt against this regime. And we saw a lot of Copts and Muslims coming together to protect their communities. There were groups of Copts and Muslims down in the streets protecting mosques, protecting churches. We saw Christians surrounding Muslims who were praying in Tahrir Square, to protect them from . . . the stones that were being thrown, or any police. . . . So we've seen a lot of really, really positive things come up . . . and we're hoping for the best."

And now? "I think for the most part the military has shown a great deal of goodwill towards the Egyptian population. . . . I'm extremely hopeful that the population of Egypt will continue, the people that mobilized, will continue to keep a check on the government . . . in order to keep them in line and keep them true to their word and following through on implementing a democratic government."

And the Muslim brotherhood? "Another hopeful event that occurred during the revolution was that the Brotherhood attempted to mobilize and distribute the green banners and flags in an attempt to organize a more Islamic demonstration, and what occurred was . . . the people turned on them and said there's no way we're going to do this. This is not anything about religion, and it’s not an Islamist revolt. This is a revolution that's demanding justice and democracy and secularism."
