Assistant Professor Contact Email : kdebeck@sfu.ca Links BIOGRAPHY Dr. Kora DeBeck is an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Policy, a Research Scientist with the Urban Health Research Initiative (UHRI) at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, and a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research/St. Paul's Hospital Foundation-PHCRI Career Scholar. Kora is also a Co-Principal Investigator for a longitudinal cohort study of at-risk youth in Vancouver (ARYS). Her research interests involve informing and evaluating health and policy interventions to reduce health and social harms among vulnerable drug using populations. She has published in many areas of urban health and addiction including: initiation into injection drug use, addiction treatment, illicit drug policy, drug law enforcement, supervised drug consumption, low-threshold income generation, and emerging risks for HIV among people who inject drugs. Kora specializes in longitudinal cohort methodologies, and innovative approaches to evaluating the impact of public policies and programs on the health of vulnerable populations. She has a strong track-record in knowledge translation and works to ensure that research from the Urban Health Research Initiative is relevant and accessible to community organizations, policy makers and other stakeholders with the goal of increasing the impact of research findings on policy and practice and improving the health of individuals and communities –both locally and globally. Prior to joining the School of Public Policy in 2013, Kora was a CIHR funded post-doctoral fellow with the Division of AIDS in the Department of Medicine at UBC and the Centre for Public Health and Human Rights at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies from UBC (2010) and is an MPP alumni (2006).
