May 29, 2013  Master of Public Policy student Angie Natingor is this year’s winner of the Justice Emmett Hall Memorial Foundation’s student essay competition. Her paper, Caring for End-Of-Life Caregivers in British Columbia: An Intersectionality-Based Policy Analysis, was chosen by a selection panel as being the best submission in the masters category.

The Hall Foundation was created to preserve the memory of Justice Emmett M. Hall, the “father” of Canadian Medicare. Its annual student essay competition was launched in 2008 to foster Canadian health economics and health policy research among undergraduate, masters and doctoral students. Essay winners werel presented with their awards at the 2013 Canadian Association of Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR) conference in Vancouver.

January 18, 2013   An internal policy case competition was organized by the MPP Grad Caucus and the School - a successful first-time event.  Teams were involved in a 3 hour case deliberation and 30 minute presentation/Q&A in front of a panel of judges, taking on roles of BC government officials and ADMs/DMs.

Congratulations to the top-ranked teams:
1st place:  Anthony Carricato, James Knowles, Darius Pruss and Eric Warren
2nd place: Tabrina Clelland, Connor Curson and Felim Donnelly
3rd place: Sandip Basi, Tessa Cheng, Stephanie Donovan and Alanna Schroeder

June 14, 2012: Four awards were presented to Masters of Public Policy graduands as part of SFU’s June 2012 Convocation held atop Burnaby Mountain. Nancy Olewiler made the announcements at the Public Policy reception for students, friends and family following the ceremony:

  • CAPPA Award - presented to Terri Blackburn for her project titled To bee or not to bee, that is the problem: Managing wild bee decline in Canadian Agriculture
  • MPP Capstone Award – presented to Francisco Gallegos for his project titled Food security and Food Sovereignty in Tarija-Bolivia: Public Policy Opportunities and Challenges in Rural Communities
  • Ethical Significance – awarded to Joey Chopra for her project titled Mitigating violence against South Asian women in Metro Vancouver: a service provider perspective
  • Creative Title – awarded to Terri Blackburn for To bee or not to bee, that is the problem: Managing wild bee decline in Canadian Agriculture

January 19, 2012: The School hosted Connecting Policy Professionals, an evening reception at Harbour Centre that brought together current students, alumni, faculty, Co-op employers, and other organizations involved in policy work in Metro Vancouver. Dean of Arts and Social Sciences Dr. John Craig attended, as well as senior federal officials Gerry Salembier, ADM, Western Economic Diversification and Chantale Courcy, regional director of the Public Service Commission of Canada.
