Jump into the BIG Fair

If you think the BIG Fair couldn’t get much bigger, you’d be pretty justified in that belief. After all, the annual event takes up three full sides of the AQ for the better part of two days. What you haven’t seen before however, is the new Student Prep Zone from Career Services.

You may be familiar with the drop-in resume advice offered at previous BIG Fairs, but this year they’re kicking it up a notch by creating an entire Student Prep Zone. Not only can you have your resume checked out here, but you can also get online to do some last minute research on employers you’d like to meet, or just pick up some resources giving your resume or LinkedIn profile a tune up. In addition, you can sign up to have a new LinkedIn profile photo taken. Make sure to fix your hair and wear a professional looking top (consider bringing a blazer or suit jacket) so you’ll look your professional best for photo day.

This is in addition to the dozens of employers, volunteer organizations, and graduate school representatives that you’ll find at the BIG Fair in Burnaby.

Before you head out to the BIG Fair, read up on how to make the most of the opportunity:

Or just keep these five tips in mind:

  1. Introduce yourself! Don’t just take a brochure and bolt, leave an impression with employers.
  2. Research! Read about some previous attendees. Choose some favourites and research the company.
  3. Ask Questions! Now that you’ve done some basic research, you’ll be able to ask insightful questions.
  4. Dress the Part! Yes, you’re at school, but if you plan on approaching employers aim for at least business casual.
  5. Follow Up! If you speak with a recruiter, get their contact information and follow up in a few days.
