Get Involved: Engage Your Faculty!

Get Involved: Engage Your Faculty!
By: Mike Wong
We hope that you have settled into the groove of the new semester, having survived the chaotic first week of locating where your lecture is, and who the smartest-looking kid in your class is. While academics are of priority, you may want to consider how you might get involved with your faculty. Here’s an opportunity for you to expand your passion for what you are studying, be represented in your academic experience, and perhaps get some clarity about your career options and opportunities.
The first direct association you can create with your faculty is to participate in your student union (Chemistry Student Society (CSS), Psychology Student Union (PSU), etc.) You are automatically a member when you are accepted into your chosen faculty. Your student union exists so that it can be your representation for any issues you may have with the university, or your classes. If you have any questions, your student union is here to help! Besides this representation, they are also here to ensure that your experience with your faculty is memorable, by hosting multiple events and socials over the semester, much similar to school clubs. However, most students that attend these events are your fellow students who are in the same faculty, and this can help build your pride and culture of your faculty. In addition, the Sciences' annual Geek Week is happening next week on January 21-25, where Science streams will be in the AQ South Concourse to showcase their department (Rumour has it that the Chemistry students are known to create ice cream for you to enjoy!)
Also, Work Integrated Learning (WIL) will also be offering drop-in resume advising on Tuesday and Thursday (January 22-24) from 10:30am-2:00pm!
Another reason to participate in your faculty is for the career education and professional development. For example, the BPK, Biology, and Physics departments are hosting their Career Nights next week. Students can listen and speak to professionals employed in their field about their experiences and learn what opportunities there are after graduation. This is an excellent way to help you think about what you want to do after graduation and ultimately, your career afterwards. In addition, your faculty or department has many affiliations with companies and organizations, and many times they send job postings to the students, and/or host speical events.
So, while it is still the beginning of the semester, start thinking about how you want your next four months to go, and consider getting involved with your faculty! It is almost always free, and will definitely benefit you in the long haul if you need any advice or assistance!
