Caring for the Elderly with Three Links Care Society

Caring for the Elderly with Three Links Care Society
By: Loren Catotal
Three Links Care Society is a care facility that provides housing and residential care not only for seniors, but also for people with special needs. Three Links Care Centre, Three Links Manor and Three Links Houses are all located in the same street in the Renfrew-Collingwood area of East Vancouver. As a former Three Links volunteer, I guarantee that spending time with seniors is very fulfilling! There is nothing quite like talking to people who grew up in the ‘30s and listening to their interesting stories about how different life was during their youth.
Type of Three Links Volunteers
- Social Visitor. Social visitors bond with the seniors by playing games with them, doing an activity together or simply by visiting them regularly for the sake of companionship. Conversations with old people are actually delightful. They might even teach you a thing or two about life!
- Coffee Corner Host. These volunteers are responsible for hosting a coffee social in the dining room to create an outlet for socializing. So, if you have an affinity for coffee and having conversations, this is the perfect opportunity for you.
- Manicure Volunteer. If you paint your nails like a professional, then this might be the right fit for you! No training or experience is required.
- Activity Host. Maybe it is a movie night or simply a few hours of playing games, but being an activity host is always fun, regardless of what the chosen activity might be.
- Sewing Volunteer. If you have a talent for sewing and have the ability to make some basic alterations to residents’ clothes, then consider this role! Unfortunately, aging has a negative effect on people’s bodies, so most seniors cannot move their arms or legs as much as they could during their youth. Therefore, sewing volunteers can be a huge help to seniors by altering their clothes to be more “senior-friendly.”
- Front Door Responder Volunteer. This volunteer is in charge of screening individuals who wish to enter Three Links’ building. Alertness and the ability to follow directions can be very useful, since Front Door Responder Volunteers must understand that security inside the facility is a serious matter.
If you are interested in volunteering, Three Links Care Society is located in 2934 East 22nd Avenue, Vancouver. You can also e-mail at volunteers@threelinks.com or call 604-438-7563 for more information!
