CEVF 2013 Recap - Part 5

The 2013 Community Engagement and Volunteer Fair was one third of The BIG Fair, which also included Career and Professional School components. This year, the annual event was held over a period of three days, with one at the Surrey campus and two at the Burnaby campus. It included approximately fifty volunteer organizations which came out to recruit student volunteers and spread the message of their cause. 

Variety – The Children’s Charity

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

The Variety organization looks for reliable, punctual, outgoing, and fun individuals who work well with instructions and are engaged with helping children with special needs.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

There is no minimum time commitment as this organization is mostly events based which are typical 3 hour shifts

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Try to research events before hand to see which area(s) you are interested in helping.

Junior Achievement of B.C

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

The Junior Achievement of BC looks for volunteers who have a business focused strength (ie. studying business, economics, education, marketing, and communication). Having experience in public speaking is key as well as experience in working with children and youth.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

There are 7 programs in B.C. with flexible time commitments. Typically, there are opportunities that range from 4-20 hours total but alternates weeks due to different event times and functions.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Being a confident public speaker is key so the organization recommends gaining experience before applying to volunteer. Also, they are looking for good role models for students and someone who has future goals of their own. 

Canucks Autism Network

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

The Canucks Autism Network is looking for volunteers who are patient, are interested in helping the community, and have experience in working with children.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

The time commitment ranges from events based positions (3-4 hours per event) or a period of 8-10 weeks with 1 hour per week sessions.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Apply! Volunteering with the Canucks Autism Network (or any organization) will provide you with new skills and will help you with future employment opportunities.
