CEVF 2013 Recap - Part 6

The 2013 Community Engagement and Volunteer Fair was one third of The BIG Fair, which also included Career and Professional School components. This year, the annual event was held over a period of three days, with one at the Surrey campus and two at the Burnaby campus. It included approximately fifty volunteer organizations which came out to recruit student volunteers and spread the message of their cause.

AIDS Vancouver

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

AIDS Vancouver is looking for volunteers who are people-persons, with friendly, outgoing demeanors. They also require reliability in volunteers. They have many ways to get involved, with varying lengths of time for commitment; however, many event outreach programs typically require a minimum of 4 hours a week for a whole year.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

Their website has an online application interested people can fill out quickly. After filling out the application, they will contact you as soon as possible and conduct an interview. They want to know more about the potential volunteer and what they have to offer. They are also interested to see what the organization can offer for the individual in terms of experience and skill building.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

The best advice they would give to people searching for volunteer opportunities is to ‘find something you love and DO IT!’

ALS Society

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

They are looking for volunteers who are dedicated, with a willingness and desire to help. Some of the attributes in a volunteer they appreciate include energetic, trustworthiness and community-driven.  To apply for a volunteer position, check out their website and follow the volunteer application procedure.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

They have a very flexible, no fixed term commitment for volunteers. It varies depending on what the individual is doing and how much time they have to give. For example, organizing one of the 16 walks for ALS has a set number of committee meetings per month that require 2 to 4 hours, the time commitment still varies depending on what an individual’s position in the committee is.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Susan Hampton, the outreach for their presence in the BIG Fair, advised that ‘you find something you love to do.’

Battered Women’s Support Service

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

They are looking for non-judgemental, open and compassionate individuals to volunteer. The Intake/Crises Program requires training –albeit free, twice a year- with a feminist & equality discourse, counseling skills, as well as an advocate for social change and social justice.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

The storefront for My Sister’s Closet and the office work programs are fairly flexible. The Crises/Intake line requires volunteers to commit to 180 hours per year which is 4 hours a week. After the completion of the 180 hours, volunteers receive a certificate and letter of recommendation.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Ruth, the outreach for BWSS, says the best advice she can give to volunteers is to ‘look for a place you really like and sometimes it also helps see where you want to work after you graduate.’

CARE Society

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

The CARE Society is not so much looking for volunteers as it is looking for students around the university area who are interested in travelling around the world for a volunteer, humanitarian project purpose. Students are the ones who find the project overseas – any type of project including microeconomics, humanitarian, science. The CARE Society then reviews the application and if possible, they fund the airline tickets – back and forth – to support students in their endeavor. They are partnered with Asia Miles and help students travel practically anywhere. It is open to all people who are interested.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

The amount of time students are committed to their humanitarian project varies and is up to the student; however, they prefer that the projects are not shorter than 3 weeks in length.

Greg suggested that when looking for humanitarian projects, find one that you’re really interested in and feel really strongly about it! This can be applied for volunteer work too.

LOVE  - Leave Out Violence BC

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

There are different positions for LOVE for people who are interested in volunteering. They are interested in people who have experience working with youth, someone who is willing to learn, able to perform under high stress environment and is able to use the strengths based approach when dealing with people.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

The amount of commitment depends on the volunteer position someone takes up and is project based. It varies from three months to a year and is fairly flexible. Moreover, the positions are also very flexible and if you are good at something, they are more than willing to hear about it and see how it can work with their organization.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Camila, the representative at the LOVE booth, said that the best way to find volunteer opportunities is to research specific organizations and see which one the best fit is for you!
