CEVF 2013 Recap - Part 7

The 2013 Community Engagement and Volunteer Fair was one third of The BIG Fair, which also included Career and Professional School components. This year, the annual event was held over a period of three days, with one at the Surrey campus and two at the Burnaby campus. It included approximately fifty volunteer organizations which came out to recruit student volunteers and spread the message of their cause.

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

We want volunteers who are keen and enthusiastic! In particular, we look for individuals who want to learn more about/give back to the communications community.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

There's a variety of different ways that students can volunteer with IABC year round. You can be more hands on and join one of our committees or you can be an event volunteer. Regardless of your skills, whether they lie in event management, social media, graphic design, writing or outreach, we'd love for you to get in touch with us!

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Our advice is: volunteer! It definitely adds to your career development and makes you a more well-rounded individual.

Community Volunteer Connections

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

For us, volunteers should be understanding, responsible and reliable. We definitely welcome students who are in disciplines such as psychology, social work and nursing, but we are open to all different skill sets and would love for you to bring your own unique talents!

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

Generally we ask for a 6 month commitment, approximately once a week for four hours.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Students should ensure that they are able to make the time commitment required for different volunteering jobs and follow through with the opportunities they do sign up for.

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

We would like volunteers with good communication skills who are comfortable working with different types of people and patients.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

Generally we ask for 4 hour shifts two times a month.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Try volunteering somewhere unique, doing something different than you usually do. Keep an open mind because it helps you become well-rounded.

What qualifications do you look for in potential volunteers?

We need volunteers who are people-oriented! From our experience, students have been fantastic. Furthermore, we require passion, patience and flexibility.

How long would a volunteer commitment be with your organization?

The time commitment is typically 4 hours a week, but this is flexible and depends on who you are matched with.

What advice would you give to a student who is looking to volunteer?

Be passionate! Pursue opportunities that you have a passion for, but also keep an open mind with different possibilities.
