Engage with SFU Surrey: the Student Ambassador Program

Engage with SFU Surrey: the Student Ambassador Program
By: Hannah Choo
Various organizations from the community took over the Mezzanine at the Surrey campus as part of the SFU Volunteer & Civic Engagement Week, hosted by SFU Surrey Student Life. This was an opportunity for students who only attended the Surrey campus, for there were local organizations such as the BC Cancer Foundation Events, the Langley Hospice Society, Surrey Heritage Services and the Surrey Crime Prevention Society.
Also taking part of the event was the Student Ambassador Program, which is the official volunteer program at the Surrey campus. Through the event, the Student Ambassador Program helped promote student life on the Surrey campus. “Student Life organized one of the events during the Civic Engagement Week called ‘Volunteer Fair’ where different organizations and clubs joined us to recruit volunteers,” said Cristel Moubarak, Student Life Assistant at SFU Surrey.
Student involvement on campus and in the community is important, and there are several reasons as to why students should engage in these experiences and take advantage of the events like the Volunteer & Civic Engagement Week. “Volunteering promoted my personal development on different levels: developing leadership, networking, communication, organization and administrative and marketing skills,” explained Cristel. “I believe any student seeking an opportunity to improve leadership and interpersonal skills should definitely consider the Student Ambassador Program, [which is] an open learning experience.”
