The First Day of Volunteering with a New Organization

The First Day of Volunteering with a New Organization
By: Rebekah Abebe
If you are anything like me, trying something new, in a new environment, with a new group of people, can be nerve racking and uncomfortable. With volunteering, the pressure is reduced as compared to work experience because you are not exchanging your skills for payment, but rather helping. Through volunteering you can practice starting and maintaining conversations with new people who may not be extroverted. On your first day volunteering with a new organization take the initiative to introduce yourself to the coordinator and other volunteers. Ask lots of questions about the organization’s goals to show that you are interested and share the same motivations. Making a good impression on your first day can make future volunteering opportunities less intimidating.
