Get Involved With The Vancouver Fringe Festival

Get Involved With The Vancouver Fringe Festival
By: Anju Chhokar
The Vancouver Fringe Festival is a celebration of all types of theater that takes place over the course of eleven exciting days in September on Granville Island. A festive event, Vancouver Fringe breaks down the traditional theatric boundaries with a “Theater for Everyone” mission, allowing all types of performances to show their talent to Vancouver! It began in 1985 and has a long standing reputation as one of the top art festivals in the city.
Vancouver Fringe is currently recruiting volunteers for a range of tasks so you can be sure to find a position that caters to your interests. This is a great way for students to get engaged with the community, with positions varying from marketing, finance, design, administrative positions and all the way to bartending. A friendly environment, working with the Fringe festival this year will surely be a great way to gain crucial interpersonal, management and leadership skills which are incredibly valuable. Positions are flexible with your current schedule and all proceeds from this festival go to charity.
Some of the volunteer opportunities available with the VFF Include:
Volunteer Team Leader: Assist the volunteer coordinator in recruitment, scheduling, training, and supervision of over 600 volunteers.
Countroom Volunteers: Stay warm and dry counting currency! Great for people who like to do math, flow charts and are interested in finance.
Ticket Sellers and Ushers: Work in pairs to sell tickets to the show, handle money and keep track of how many pass holders attend each performance. Must be familiar with Canadian currency and have a high level of spoken English.
Site Crew/Production: Involves physical work, helping with production, signage and painting. Great for those that love to decorate.
Bartenders: Must have your Serving It Right certification for Fringe Bar customers at the Agro Café and Performance Works. **Note: Fringe Bar volunteers must be 19 years of age or older, and must have at least some late-night availability.**
Event Volunteers: Help out on the Opening Night fundraiser on September 3rd and Awards Night on September 15th. Tasks include setup and strike, monitoring the silent auction, selling raffle tickets.
