Vancouver magazine is a city magazine that aims to inform, guide and entertain people who engage with city. Launched in 1967 and published 10 times a year, the magazine provides Vancouverites with guides on food culture, shopping and entertainment within the Vancouver city. It reflects the multifaceted aspects of Vancouver as an international city.

Vancouver magazine endeavors to offer their readers various perspectives of cultural issues around Vancouver. Therefore, they are always looking for qualified candidates who have a passion for exploring the city and look to gain experience in the areas of editorial, design, online, photography and marketing. Here are some of the positions available.

1. Editorial Internship

Editorial internships are offered for four-month period. Duties include fact checking, research, responding to readers and providing general administrative support. Interns may also have to write sidebars or short articles for the magazine if needed.
This position is great for students who have strong writing and proof reading skills and who would like to gain some first-hand experience in a professional publishing environment. You will have a chance to get a close look at how magazines are processed and produced.

2. Online Editorial Internship

Online editorial internships are offered for three-month period. Interns are responsible for maintaining online presence of the magazine through posting stories and pictures on the website, updating social media sites and occasional administrative work.
Unlike editorial intern, the online editor needs to have some design skills like Photoshop, Dreamweaver or InDesign to facilitate the social media page. You will get a chance to learn some online marketing skills like how to drive traffic to the website and how to enhance your SEO as well. Since people tend to read online much faster than the print, it is also important for the online editor to always have a sharp sense of news and trends.

3. Marketing Internship

Marketing internship can be either three-month or four-month. Interns help with the publicity and the promotion of the magazine. S/he will assist with marketing initiatives, event planning and communications for the magazine. Applicants of this position have to be available full time.
Although this position is unpaid, you can obtain rich experience in various fields such as sponsorship, communications and event planning. As Vancouver magazine also keeps in touch with their sister magazine Western Living from time to time, you have a good chance to know people from another organization as a marketing intern. The work experience will therefore enlarge your circle and network.

There are also other positions that I did not list here. All the positions are on an ongoing basis, which means that you could apply for them anytime. This would be a great opportunity for people who want to work in publishing in the future since Vancouver magazine offers positions of different fields that are able to suit people of different interests.  You can also find more information at their website.

Hope this piece is helpful and wish you good luck!
