International Justice Mission SFU hosts SFU Justice Week

International Justice Mission SFU hosts SFU Justice Week
By: Kaitlyn Yeung
Grab your friends and come out to SFU Justice Week! From February 23rd- 27th, International Justice Mission SFU will be hosting events to raise awareness and educate students on the different types of injustices that occurs locally and globally. This awesome week will be packed with FREE events, including: hard-hitting film screenings, a Human Trafficking panel and more!
Justice Club Days [Feb 23-24]
Justice-oriented clubs and local organizations will be tabling alongside the North AQ – this will be a great opportunity to learn more about the different initiatives in your community and how you can get involved!
Time: 10am – 3:30pm
Location: North AQ
Movie Screening: It's a Girl [Feb 24]
In India, China, and many other parts of the world today, girls are killed, aborted and abandoned simply because they are girls. The film tells the stories of abandoned and trafficked girls, of women who suffer extreme dowry-related violence, of brave mothers fighting to save their daughters’ lives, and of other mothers who would kill for a son. Entry and refreshments will be provided by donation.
Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Location: AQ 3005
Partnering club: Amnesty International SFU
Price: By Donation
Panel on Human Trafficking [Feb 25]
We will explore the issue of trafficking in persons from both the local and global perspective. Speaking, we have a member from the BC Ministry of Justice to discuss the initiatives our province has taken to prevent and prosecute crimes of human trafficking. We will also have a Fraser Health representative who will speak about her experience in relation to a trafficking identification kit recently implemented in local hospitals. In addition, we will have SFU’s very own Labour Studies professor, Kendra Strauss, who has done research on human trafficking and forms of unfreedom in contemporary economies.
Time: 2:30pm – 4:30pm
Location: Saywell Atrium
Partnering Club: Students Against Global Enslavement
Price: Free
TED Talks Screening: Let's Talk Justice [Feb 26]
Are you interested in learning more about modern slavery and other humanitarian issues? Come have a discussion with us on Thursday, February 26th during SFU Justice Week. Impactful TED talks will be screened during the event. Food and drinks will be served.
Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: Saywell Atrium
Partnering Club: UNICEF SFU
Price: Free
Bricks of Bondage [Feb 27]
Drop by and see a glimpse of what forced labour looks like. Learn more about modern-day slavery and help build awareness to prevent this issue from occurring. We will have a photo booth for you and your friends – so use your voice, both online and offline, to let others know about human trafficking. We will also be accepting donations – after all, loose change can loosen chains!
Time: 9:00am – 4:00pm
Location: Convocation Mall
Price: By Donation
Want to make real change? Help us #BreakChains by giving us a few hours of your time. Fill out this short volunteer sheet and let us know your availability for the week!
