President Petter Visits The BIG Fair

President Petter Visits The BIG Fair
By: Graham Cook
SFU President Andrew Petter made his way down to The BIG Fair 2013 to visit the volunteer organizations that came out to promote community engagement. He discussed the goals of the organizations as well as the sorts of volunteer opportunities that they had available for students.
Before the President's tour could begin, however, he was visited by Work Integrated Learning's 'Living Mannequin.' Now ready and alert he began making his way from booth to booth.
The first stop was at the Canadian Cancer Society who have consistently posted volunteer opportunities for SFU students on Symplicity. President Petter proudly shared that this year's Terry Fox Run was one of the best year, with fundraising reaching nearly $30,000.
The President was then off to the booth of Connectra Society, a not-for-profit that connects people with disabilities to activities and programs, allowing them to gain confidence and become more active in the community. He and the representatives for the organization exchanged ideas regarding civic engagement.
Finally, Andrew Petter stopped by the booth of the 3H Craftworks Society, which was being attended to by SFU Psychology alumni Hsin Yong. Craftworks provides a craft-therapy program which aids individuals working to overcome physical diisabilities and/or mental illnesses.
Over the combined four days, 138 exhibitors attended The BIG Fair, including 50 volunteer organizations. More than 140 student ambassadors were involved as well as nine engagement peers.
