Save the Whales

Save the Whales
By: by Gloria Mellesmoen
Do you have a name, email, and a minute or two to spare? SFU biology students Anna Dymytryszyn and Kimberly Saw are seeking signatures for a petition aimed at the conservation of Long-Finned Pilot Whales. Both young women have done their homework on the cause and are passionate about doing what they can for it.
Though the exact numbers are unknown, the population of the Long-Finned Pilot Whales is thought to be endangered as a result of unnecessary killing. This killing is done for meat, blubber, and as part of an annual hunt. However, after researching the topic, Anna and Kimberly present a case that takes a critical look at both the conservation of the whales and effect they have on humans.
Entwining the need to protect the rights of animals and of humans, the petition is relatable and worth a read. Anna and Kimberly’s petition explains more about their cause and seeks your approval with a signature. (More information can be found on their Facebook page.) Though the world needs activists, it also needs supporters.
