Did you know that 1 in 165 children will be diagnosed with autism in Canada?

This is just one of the many reasons why October is Autism Awareness Month.  It is a way to spread the word and inform people of the effects of autism and help them understand what it actually is.

Autism is a neurological disorder that can impair a person’s ability to communicate and relate to other people.  It is a life-long condition and much about it is yet to be understood.  Symptoms can vary from mild to very severe and in many cases can prevent the person affected from participating in ‘normal’ day to day activities.  This is where the Canucks Autism Network comes in.  This organization helps to deliver programs and services to those children that live with autism.  They provide recreational, sports, social and vocational development programs for those affected as well as their families.

This organization would not be able to do as much as they do if it weren’t for the countless volunteers who have contributed their time.  If you too would like to help this amazing cause and volunteer with this organization, there are plenty of opportunities available.

You can get the chance to work with autistic children and participate in a lot of different fun activities such as swimming and playing soccer.  Experience with children is not required, so it’s a great first step if you would like to work with children in the future.  There are also plenty of other positions available where you can help with administrative tasks at their main office.

If you are interested in this opportunity, check out the website  for all the details.  Help support autism awareness.
