Volunteer as a docent in the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Garden

Volunteer as a docent in the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Garden
By: Rui Wang
The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Garden is a very popular tourist spot in Vancouver and there are lots of volunteer opportunities in the garden. A docent is one of the most interesting volunteer positions in the garden. You will have lots of fun volunteering as a docent in such a beautiful garden and gain valuable experience for your future career.
Firstly, being a docent will give you multiple cultural experiences through guiding the visitors from different countries. When you volunteer as a docent and try to introduce the philosophy of the architecture, you will find that lots of visitors from other countries like to talk about their traditions and customs of their architecture when they discover the difference. You will have a very good opportunity to learn about cultural differences when you volunteer as a docent.
Secondly, public speaking skills will be improved when you volunteer as a docent in the garden. Sometimes there will be more than 15 visitors in one tour. Since visitors are very interested in the philosophy of the architecture of the garden, they will concentrate on listening to what you say and ask you questions if they want and so you will have lots of opportunities to interact with them during the speech. Their appreciation at the end of the tour will definitely be a great reward for your volunteering. Besides, being a docent involves lots of skills that can be transferred to your desirable job position, such as customer service skills and organizational ability and so the experience of being a docent will be a bright spot for building up you resume.
Thirdly, being a docent will be a good opportunity for you to gain experience with tourism and prepare yourself for social media or event planning positions for tourism. Maybe you do not want to be a docent for your future career. But tourism may need people to promote tourist spots by planning the events or making the advertisements. It may become easier for you to fit into these kinds of positions if you have experience volunteering as docent in a popular tourist spots in Vancouver.
