May is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month.

This event is sponsored by the MS Society of Canada, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people with MS as well as raising money for research.

MS can be a devastating disease targeting the brain and spinal cord and affecting vision, memory, balance and mobility. Canadians have one of the highest rates of MS in the world, which is why it is important that SFU students know more about this disease. You can help spread the word by volunteering with the MS Society of Canada.

One of the events coming up in June is the Rona MS Bike tour. It is a huge fundraising event that takes place every year and volunteers are needed in all areas. This event is a great way to gain experience in working and managing a large scale fundraiser and would look great on a resume. All the various volunteer positions and detailed information can be found at link.

Something else that would definitely show your dedication to the cause is volunteering on a more long-term basis. The MS Society is always looking for volunteers in various aspects such as leadership and event planning, administrative and office volunteers as well as program and client services volunteers that help provide support to those living with MS. All the information is online at this link

So, if you want to gain valuable experience volunteering with non-profit health organizations, the MS Society definitely fits the bill.  Not only will you become more knowledgeable about the disease, you can also be proud of the fact that you are helping out an amazing cause and possibly making a difference in the lives of people living with MS.
