Abuse against women is sadly common everywhere. According to a study in 1993, 50% of women in Canada have experienced an incident of physical or sexual violence at least once in their lives.  It is also a surprise that 67% of Canadians personally know someone who has either been physically or sexually abused.  Yes, violence and abuse against women seem to be deeply entrenched in our society. It is a disturbing and heartbreaking fact, but yes, it happens on a daily basis to women. Fortunately, there are some things we can do to help these abused women.

The Vancouver Rape Relief Society and Women’s Shelter is a not-for-profit organization that is committed to “advocating for woman’s equality.”  Even in the 21st century, we still live in a male-dominated society, which the shelter strongly opposes. Instead, it is trying to fight laws and social attitudes that do not treat women fairly. So, if you pride yourself as a feminist who believes in social change and equality for all, this might be the perfect volunteer opportunity.

To advocate for women’s rights, the shelter operates a 24-hour crisis center for rape victims, provides a home for women and children who are trying to escape abuse, and collects support from communities to spread their messages about women’s equality. Also, they collaborate with like-minded social service groups and institutions in order to develop alliances. This is an especially significant aspect of their objectives, as these services are extremely confidential. Therefore, alliances and connections with other institutions are imperative for the safety of the women in case of a breach of confidentiality. Last, but not the least, the shelter functions as a force that teaches people the value of equality in our society. Without organizations like this, we might not see changes in the next few decades, and women will still be treated as inferior to men.

So, say no to sexism and abuse against women. Fight the patriarchy, and give volunteering a shot. For more information, visit www.rapereliefshelter.bc.ca or call 604-872-8212.
