The topic for this week is for the hockey lovers out there: Volunteering for the Canucks! The Vancouver Canucks provide us with entertainment and the chance for your inner sport or hockey fanatic to go crazy and get pumped up on game nights! However, the Vancouver Canucks also give back to the community through such organizations as Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and the Canucks Autism Network, and which you can get active in and help out by volunteering!

The Canucks Autism Network prides itself on providing high quality programs for individuals and families living with autism and to build capacity through community networks across British Columbia.  C.A.N. is always looking for new volunteers to join their team. Through their “Learn, Support, Participate” motto, the Canucks Autism Network provides a variety of programs which volunteers can lend a hand to, such as sports, recreational, social and employment related programs. In addition, the Canucks Autism Network has opportunities for volunteering at community events, fundraisers, weekly sports programs, camps, or in their office. There is something for everyone’s interests and for those with no volunteer experience to those with a vast amount of volunteer experience.

If you are interested in volunteering for the Canucks Autism Network, send a brief email to getstartedvolunteering@canucksautism.ca and include your full name and telephone number, the city where you currently live, your volunteer experience if any, your current situation (whether in high school, post-secondary, employed or other) and why you want to volunteer with the Canucks Autism Network! For more information about the Canucks Autism Network, please visit canucksautism.ca.

Another important organization associated with the Canucks is the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, which offers a comprehensive continuum of care to over 400 children and teens with life-threatening illnesses and their families throughout British Columbia. The program encourages children to embrace life within a home-like environment, and empowering children to live fully and joyfully.  At the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, there are many roles and positions which are filled by volunteers; these range from family volunteers whose job it is to work alongside the professional care team to enhance the quality of life of the child, to a range of maintenance and facility positions, including kitchen volunteers, garden volunteers, indoor/outdoor maintenance volunteers and housekeeping volunteers. Canuck Place Children’s Hospice is currently seeking Kitchen, Housekeeping and Garden volunteers.
