Volunteering for the Volunteer & Civic Engagement Fair: Esther and Jovita Reflect

Volunteering for the Volunteer & Civic Engagement Fair: Esther and Jovita Reflect
The SFU Volunteer & Civic Engagement Fair happened last week in Burnaby and this week in Surrey. In Burnaby, the Fair ran alongside the Career and Graduate Fairs and attracted a huge number of students. Over 40 non-profits were on campus to inform students about their causes and how students can get involved.
A big part of the success of this year’s Fairs is the student volunteers who helped ensure that things ran smoothly. Two of them, Esther Lee and Jovita Janitra, are both 3rd year Psychology students who helped out at the Burnaby fair. They offered their thoughts on Fair and reflected on their experience as a volunteer.
Jovita’s Interview:
What initially attracted you to this volunteer position?
In the past, I volunteered to gain more experience that I can add to my resume. I also thought that by volunteering for the Fair, I could get some information on different volunteers or career opportunities that are available.
How was your volunteer experience at the fair?
My volunteer experience was great. I discovered different volunteer opportunities offered by off-campus organizations that I wasn’t aware of. I received in-depth information about these opportunities, which was nice too.
Also, at the Fair, I was able to get an interview for a volunteer position in a childcare center. I am looking forward to the interview for that volunteer position.
Would you recommend this volunteer experience to students for future fairs?
I would recommend this volunteer experience to other students because through volunteering, I got to know more students from SFU and got the chance to interact with exhibitors. The fair too will give students the chance to know different opportunities if they wished to volunteer and the different careers that students may want to get information about.
Esther’s Interview:
What initially attracted you to this volunteer position?
The volunteer position seemed fun and I think it would be a great time to get involved in school activities and start building connections.
How was your volunteer experience at the fair?
It was great and fun at the same time.It gives me more options for my co-op.
Would you recommend this volunteer experience to students for future fairs?
Yes, definitely.
The Volunteer & Civic Engagement Fair in Burnaby was organized with the help of Volunteer Burnaby. If you missed this year’s Fair but are looking for ways to get involved, please feel free to contact SFU Volunteer Services. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.
