Inspired by SFU’s recent Clubs Day, here are some reasons why joining a club in university is always a wonderful idea!

  1. Joining clubs is a great way to network with other like-minded individuals! In this day and age, connections are valuable assets that may help your career prospects in the future, especially when you are a university student. More importantly, people with similar interests and ambitions will surely motivate and inspire you even more to reach your goals.
  2. Not just that, it is also a chance to meet people who can potentially be your friends. Networking is useful, but genuinely bonding and connecting with others is priceless. Joining a club might help you find your niche in university if you think you haven’t found yours just yet.
  3. Being part of a club proves that you are a well-rounded person! You might graduate with a stellar 4.0 GPA, but without any co-curricular activities, it can hurt your future career. There is no doubt that academia must be prioritized, but surely, employers would also want to know if you can be a team player. Being a valuable member of a club is certainly a reflection on your personal and professional development.
  4. It can be a great a learning experience. If you are a dedicated Harry Potter fan, join the Quidditch Club! If you have an affinity for nature and outdoor activities, join the Outdoors Club! If you have a deep appreciation for tea, why not join SFU Tea?  Most clubs are open to everyone, so there is no reason to be intimidated or shy to try out new activities that interest you. The truth is that the only thing they require is a genuine interest in their club, and that is all! Never ever hesitate to join. Your fellow club members will be willing to teach and welcome you; that is for sure!

Before you say that university life is boring and exhausting, think again! Always remember that there is a saying that goes: “university life is what you make of it”, and it surely is! So, show up to that icebreaker you’ve always wanted to go and have lots of fun. My advice is not to wait until your last year at SFU to join a club. I guarantee you that you will not regret joining one!
